Leadership style and behaviour are among the most significant drivers of organisational culture and have a profound impact on the organisation's effectiveness and the results it achieves.
Getting Started
We use the following steps to help leaders recognise and enhance their impact on organisational results:
· Typically we will commence work with an individual leader by conducting a 360 degree feedback process using one of the most rigorously researched yet intuitively accessible instruments available. The client thus gains a profound understanding of the impact his or her leadership style is having upon those he or she works with.
· The leader then works with an Anteri coach to explore those areas where his or her impact is proving counter-productive and to develop a more constructive leadership style. Our experience is that most leaders, to their surprise, see remarkable organisational improvements directly related to their refocused efforts within just a few weeks. Coaching Skills for Leaders
The coaching process is an immensely powerful way of enabling others to discover their full potential and achieve their most challenging goals. We frequently find that once an individual leader has experienced coaching he or she will want to learn this skill to use personally in the development of his or her direct reports and others in the organisation. We certainly recommend this as a powerful next step in the leadership development process which can often resemble the astounding but natural metamorphosis that produces a butterfly. In others words, the leaders who really want to get results through others, recognise that they must:
· learn to 'walk alongside' others
· understand what their staff need in order to achieve optimum performance
· find what motivates their direct reports and develop the skills necessary to align staff's efforts with organisational needs
and leverage their output for maximum effectiveness
Without these skills they will continue to struggle against forces they simply don't comprehend and will consequently fall by the wayside already littered with confused managers striving unsuccessfully to be effective leaders.
Leadership and Culture
A significant part of our business therefore, is delivering training courses in coaching skills for leaders and managers at all levels within organisations. We find that this is one of the highest leverage activities an organisation can commit to. When all the leaders, from the executive level to middle and first line management, are competent in using coaching skills the organisation can truly begin to tap its full potential. The consistent use of a coaching approach to management percolates its way through the organisation and creates, what we call, a 'coaching culture'. This is where individuals expect to be coached into finding their optimum solutions. Self-identification of weaknesses or errors become a comfortable and accepted part of continuous improvement. Everyone in the organisation easily adopts a coaching approach to interacting with their peers and direct reports. Coaching simply becomes, 'the way things are done round here'.
We would love to see the day when the word 'coaching' disappears from the business vocabulary, and this approach just becomes the way all of us do business and relate to each other at work and elsewhere.
