Leadership Challenges

"It's lonely at the top," might sound like a song-writer's cliche but it is also the very real silent plea of many high-level leaders. Talented accountants, engineers, salespeople, lawyers, marketers and project managers are promoted, due to admirable skills in their fields, into the uncharted terrain of leadership roles. Since leadership is getting results through others the newly appointed leader is expected to somehow possess and display a set of skills which may be totally alien from those in which he or she has excelled thus far. Uncertainty, insecurity, costly mistakes and stress abound. Should anyone be surprised?
The Leadership Gap
Indeed, managing in organisations has never been tougher. More is required of executives, business owners and other leaders. Influencing positively, being emotionally intelligent, thinking strategically, providing exceptional service and ‘walking the talk’ are just a few of the daily challenges inherent in achieving the results the organisation demands. What is clear is that great leadership is needed as never before.
However, we find that despite being trotted through a series of management and leadership programmes, the vast majority of leaders are often somewhat at sea as to how to become the finest version of a leader that they can be. They have no real insight into where they really need to be focussing their attention for maximum effectiveness. Who do they ask at this point? The pressure is full-on to achieve task-oriented activities and the fear-level associated with admitting to less than 'full-on competence' is high.
